About this data
Where does this local data come from?
Two official datasets: DESNZ subnational electricity and gas consumption statistics (non-domestic columns, 2024) and ONS UK Business Counts (2026) via Nomis. Both are published under the Open Government Licence and both are free to cite. We join them on the ONS area code and publish the result for all 350 areas.
Do business energy prices vary by area?
Yes, though not as much as people expect. The energy itself costs the same wherever you are, but network charges are set regionally and are built into your unit rate and standing charge, so two identical businesses in different regions get different quotes. Your meter number, not your postcode, decides which region you are charged for.
Does this show what businesses in my area pay?
It shows what they use. Official price data is published by size of user rather than by area, so we show the usage for your area and what that would cost at the national average for that size band. It is an illustration rather than a local price.
Why are the figures for non-domestic rather than business premises?
Because that is how DESNZ publishes them. Non-domestic covers businesses, public sector buildings, schools, hospitals and other organisations. The ONS business counts alongside them show how many actual businesses are registered in the area.
