What this means for your renewal
Wholesale electricity prices have been climbing. New fixed contracts are priced from forward wholesale costs, so quotes tend to follow the market. If your contract ends in the next six months, it's worth getting quotes now: many suppliers will quote for a contract that starts when your current one ends, so you can lock in a price early.
This describes what has already happened in the market. It is not a forecast. Charts show a 7-day average of daily prices, updated every morning.

What drives wholesale electricity prices?
Gas is the biggest single influence. Gas-fired power stations often set the marginal price of electricity in Great Britain, so wholesale electricity tends to follow the gas market.
Wind, solar and demand
Windy, sunny days with low demand bring more cheap renewable power onto the system and push prices down, sometimes sharply. Cold, still evenings do the opposite.
Supply and interconnectors
Power station outages, nuclear availability and flows over interconnectors to Europe and Norway all move short-term prices.
Carbon costs
Gas-fired power stations pay for their emissions under the UK Emissions Trading Scheme and the Carbon Price Support, which adds to the cost of fossil-fuelled electricity.
What wholesale electricity prices mean for your business
Suppliers price a new fixed contract from forward wholesale prices for the period you'll be supplied, then add network charges, policy costs, metering, their own costs and margin, and any broker commission. A quote requested today reflects today's market; prices on an existing fixed contract don't change until renewal.
If your contract ends in the next few months, watch the 30-day trend above and get quotes early. See what businesses actually pay for electricity, or read how wholesale prices work.

Wholesale electricity price FAQs
What is the wholesale price of electricity today?
The latest full day of data (31 Oct 2026) averaged £223.31 per MWh, about 22.33p per kWh. The 30-day average is £153.92 per MWh. This is the GB Market Index Price from Elexon, volume-weighted across the day.
How much of a business electricity bill is wholesale cost?
Wholesale energy is usually the largest single part of a business electricity price, but a large share is also network charges, policy costs, metering and supplier costs. That is why business prices per kWh are well above the wholesale price. See non-commodity costs.
Why is wholesale electricity linked to gas prices?
Gas-fired power stations often set the marginal price of electricity in Great Britain, so when gas gets more expensive, wholesale electricity usually follows. On windy, low-demand days cheaper renewable generation can push prices well down.
Why do daily prices swing so much?
Short-term prices respond to weather, wind and solar output, demand, power station outages and interconnector flows. The 7-day and 30-day averages give a better sense of direction.
