Switching

How to switch business energy supplier

  1. Find your contract end date. It is on your bill or contract. Most suppliers will quote for a contract that starts the day your current one ends, up to a year ahead. The renewal planner works the dates out for you.
  2. Check whether you owe notice. Some contracts require written notice before the end date. Microbusinesses cannot be held in by a notice requirement at the end of a fixed term.
  3. Have your details ready. Your MPAN or MPRN, annual usage in kWh, and your current unit rate and standing charge.
  4. Compare on one day. Prices move daily with the wholesale market, so quotes gathered a fortnight apart are not comparable.
  5. Compare the total, not the headline rate. The quote comparison calculator shows which offer is cheaper at your usage once the standing charge is counted.
  6. Sign, and let the new supplier do the rest. It arranges the transfer, your supply is never interrupted, and you get a final bill from the old supplier.

The full switching guide covers objections, exit fees and what to do if a switch is blocked.

FAQs

Business energy supplier FAQs

Who are the biggest business energy suppliers in the UK?

Large suppliers to UK businesses include British Gas, EDF, E.ON (through E.ON Next and npower Business Solutions), SSE Energy Solutions, ScottishPower, TotalEnergies and SEFE Energy, alongside business specialists such as Yü Energy, Crown Gas & Power, Valda and SmartestEnergy. Which suits you depends on your size, meter and contract needs.

Which business energy supplier is cheapest?

There is no single cheapest supplier. Business prices are quoted individually and depend on your region, meter, usage, credit rating and contract length, and they change daily with the wholesale market. The only way to know is to compare quotes for your own supply on the day you buy.

Does Octopus Energy do business energy?

Yes. Octopus Energy supplies business customers as well as households, and has its own business contact routes and online account. See our Octopus Energy business profile for what it offers and how to reach it.

Can I use a domestic energy supplier for my business?

Only if that supplier offers business contracts. Business premises need a business contract: being billed on a domestic tariff at business premises can cause problems with VAT, the Climate Change Levy and your contract terms. Running a business from home is the exception, covered in our home business energy guide.

What happens if my business energy supplier goes bust?

Ofgem appoints a Supplier of Last Resort to take over customers, and your supply continues without interruption. You are moved onto a deemed contract with the new supplier and can compare and switch from there. See what happens if your supplier goes bust.

How do you check these supplier details?

Every profile is built from the supplier's own website, Companies House and Ofgem, never from other comparison sites. Profiles were last checked on 12 September 2026.
