What this means for your renewal
Wholesale gas prices have been climbing. New fixed contracts are priced from forward wholesale costs, so quotes tend to follow the market. If your contract ends in the next six months, it's worth getting quotes now: many suppliers will quote for a contract that starts when your current one ends, so you can lock in a price early.
This describes what has already happened in the market. It is not a forecast. Charts show a 7-day average of daily prices, updated every morning.

What drives wholesale gas prices?
Great Britain's gas price is set in an international market. Britain produces some gas from the North Sea but imports much of what it uses, by pipeline from Norway and Europe and as liquefied natural gas (LNG), so global demand and LNG competition with Europe and Asia move the price here.
Weather and season
Cold weather raises demand for heating and for gas-fired power at the same time. Prices are usually higher in winter.
Supply disruptions and storage
Outages at gas fields, pipelines or LNG terminals, and how full European storage is heading into winter, can move prices quickly.
What wholesale gas prices mean for your business
Suppliers price a new fixed contract from forward wholesale prices for the period you'll be supplied, then add network charges, policy costs, metering, their own costs and margin, and any broker commission. A quote requested today reflects today's market; prices on an existing fixed contract don't change until renewal.
If your contract ends in the next few months, watch the 30-day trend above and get quotes early. See what businesses actually pay for gas, or read how wholesale prices work.

Wholesale gas price FAQs
What is the wholesale price of gas today?
The System Average Price for 31 Oct 2026 was 8.74p per kWh (256.1p per therm). The 30-day average is 7.27p per kWh. Source: National Gas Transmission.
What is the System Average Price (SAP)?
SAP is the average price of all gas traded on the day on the On-the-day Commodity Market for each gas day, published by National Gas Transmission. It is a widely used measure of the GB spot gas price.
How do I convert pence per therm to pence per kWh?
Divide pence per therm by 29.3071. For example, 100p per therm is 3.41p per kWh.
Why does wholesale gas affect electricity too?
Gas-fired power stations often set the marginal price of electricity, so higher gas prices usually push wholesale electricity up as well.
Is this a forecast?
