How to get a business gas quote
A gas quote is priced against your actual supply point, so three things make it accurate:
- Your MPRN. The 6 to 10 digit number that identifies your gas supply. It is on your bill, and our MPRN guide shows where to look if you cannot find it.
- Your annual quantity (AQ). The estimate of how much gas your premises uses in a year, in kWh. Suppliers price from it, and it is the figure that decides which size band you fall into.
- Your contract end date. Suppliers quote for a contract that starts when your current one ends, so the date shapes the price you are offered.
If you do not have those to hand, enter your postcode anyway: with your permission the comparison looks them up from the industry databases. To check a reading against your bill first, use the gas meter reading converter.
Types of business gas contract
| Contract | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed price | Your unit rate and standing charge stay the same for the whole term, usually one to five years. | Businesses that want certainty, especially those with heating-led winter bills. |
| Fixed with pass-through | The gas commodity price is fixed; transportation and other non-energy costs are passed through and can change. | Larger users who want a sharper headline rate. |
| Flexible | Gas is bought in tranches over time against the wholesale market. | High-volume and multi-site users with a buying strategy. |
| Variable or rolling | No fixed term; the price can change with notice. | Short-term needs while you arrange a fixed contract. |
| Carbon-offset or biomethane | Standard gas with offsets, or gas matched to green gas certificates. | Businesses reporting on emissions or with green targets. |
| Deemed or out-of-contract | What you pay with no contract in place. Usually far more expensive. | No one. Agree a contract quickly. |
Business gas meters and how your kWh are worked out
Knowing your meter and annual usage makes gas quotes accurate first time.
Your MPRN
The meter point reference number identifies your gas supply. It's on your bill, usually 6 to 10 digits. Find your MPRN.
Annual quantity
The industry estimate of how much gas your site uses in a year, in kWh. Suppliers use it to price your contract, so check it looks right.
From cubic metres to kWh
kWh = volume in m³ × correction factor (1.02264) × calorific value ÷ 3.6. Imperial meters read in hundreds of cubic feet, so the volume is converted to m³ first.
How to switch business gas supplier
- Check your end date and notice terms. Your bill or contract shows when your deal ends and whether you must give written notice to stop it rolling over.
- Find your MPRN and annual usage. Both are on your bill. With your permission the comparison can look them up.
- Compare in good time. Many suppliers will quote months ahead for a contract starting when yours ends, so you're not forced onto renewal rates.
- Compare the full cost. Unit rate, standing charge, term and broker fee together, over a year of your real usage.
- Agree and switch. The new supplier arranges everything. Your gas keeps flowing throughout.
Microbusiness? If you use no more than 293,000 kWh of gas a year, or have fewer than 10 employees and turnover or balance sheet of no more than £2 million, you're a microbusiness and get extra protections. What that means for you.

What this means for your renewal
Wholesale gas prices have been climbing. New fixed contracts are priced from forward wholesale costs, so quotes tend to follow the market. If your contract ends in the next six months, it's worth getting quotes now: many suppliers will quote for a contract that starts when your current one ends, so you can lock in a price early.
This describes what has already happened in the market. It is not a forecast. Charts show a 7-day average of daily prices, updated every morning.
What makes up a business gas bill?
Unit rate
The price per kWh of gas you use. Wholesale gas is the biggest part of it, alongside network costs, the supplier's costs and margin, and any broker commission.
Standing charge
A fixed daily charge for your gas supply, including metering. Sites that use little gas outside winter should weigh it carefully against the unit rate.
Transportation costs
Charges for the national transmission system and your local gas distribution network, built into your rates. They vary by network area and by the size of your supply.
Climate Change Levy
0.801p per kWh on gas from 1 April 2026. Domestic-level users and charities using gas for non-business purposes don't pay it.
VAT
20% standard rate, or 5% if you use no more than 145 kWh a day on average, or 4,397 kWh a month. The temporary zero rate from October 2026 does not cover gas.
Conversion to kWh
Your meter reads cubic metres or feet. Suppliers convert this to kWh using the gas's calorific value and a correction factor, both shown on your bill.
Business gas FAQs
What is the average business gas price per kWh?
UK businesses paid an average of 5.28p per kWh for gas in Q2 2026, including the Climate Change Levy but not VAT (DESNZ). The smallest gas users, using under 278,000 kWh a year, paid 9.31p. These averages include standing charges spread across the units used.
Why do small businesses pay more per kWh for gas?
Standing charges and metering costs are spread over fewer units, and smaller users have less buying power. In Q2 2026 the smallest gas users paid 9.31p per kWh on average, compared with 4.86p for the next band up.
How is business gas measured and billed?
Your meter measures gas by volume, in cubic metres or cubic feet. Your supplier converts that into kWh using the calorific value of the gas and a volume correction factor, then bills you per kWh. Both figures should appear on your bill.
Do I pay VAT on business gas?
Business gas is charged at the standard 20% VAT rate unless it qualifies for relief. You can pay 5% if you use no more than 145 kWh a day on average, or 4,397 kWh a month, or if the gas is for charitable non-business use or domestic use. The temporary zero rate from October 2026 applies to electricity only, not gas. More on VAT on business energy.
Is there a Climate Change Levy on gas?
Yes. From 1 April 2026 the Climate Change Levy on gas is 0.801p per kWh, rising to 0.827p from 1 April 2027. Businesses with a Climate Change Agreement get a 89% discount on gas.
What is an MPRN?
Your MPRN (meter point reference number) identifies your gas supply point. It is usually 6 to 10 digits long and printed on your gas bill. Giving it when you ask for quotes helps suppliers price your supply accurately. How to find your MPRN.
Can I get business gas and electricity from the same supplier?
Yes, many suppliers offer both, but a dual fuel deal isn't always cheaper. Business gas and electricity are usually separate contracts, so it often pays to compare each fuel on its own and line up the end dates.
What happens to my gas supply when I switch?
Nothing changes physically. Your local gas network keeps delivering gas through the same pipes and meter. Only the company that bills you changes.
